Gantz (Japan, 2011) - Directed by Shinsuke Sato Strong early sections give the rare treat of expensive effects, chic sci-fi, and unflinching gore. Mixture of comic moments, continuous action, and accomplished visuals begins to wane toward the end as dramatic scenes play out a little too long and choreography becomes awkward.
Beck (Japan, 2010) - Directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi Truncates the original manga and makes an admirable attempt at retaining its essence, the poignant slice-of-life, but with the loss of those slices-of-life’s details which were spread over time in the manga, much potence is lost. Warm filmic quality and emphasis on montages and ambient sounds; interesting use of long still scenes, carefully posed and framed, with a unique decision to reflect the manga and avoid representing Koyuki’s singing with a human voice, using scenic imagery and even bowed instrumentation instead.
